Philip Rivers Expects the 49ers Best

Philip Rivers Expects the 49ers Best

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images(SAN DIEGO) -- The San Diego Chargers find themselves still in the thick of things in the AFC as they head into their game on Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers.

San Diego sits in the eighth spot with the Chiefs, Ravens, and Steelers ahead of them.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is expecting the 49ers to be in spoiler mode, having been eliminated last weekend.

"Not only can they embrace that role if they so choose. I also know that there's a lot of prideful, Pro-Bowl players on that team," Rivers said. "When they suit up they play."

San Francisco is allowing 20.4 points a game this year.

49ers safety Antoine Bethea said of Rivers is a "veteran quarterback one of the top ten, quarterbacks in the league. He's been doing it for a while and he's got a lot of weapons to get the ball to."

Patriots Keep AFC’s Top Spot with Win over San Diego

Patriots Keep AFC’s Top Spot with Win over San Diego

Jim Rogash/Getty Images(SAN DIEGO) -- The New England Patriots scored 10 points in the fourth quarter while holding San Diego scoreless in the second half to come away with a 23-14 win on Sunday night. With the win, New England (10-3) keeps the top spot in the AFC as they hold the tie-breaker with Denver.

The deciding play came halfway through the fourth quarter when Julian Edelman caught a short pass from Tom Brady and ran an extra 55 yards to the end zone, extending the Patriots lead.

New England trailed 14-6 in the second quarter before a blocked punt and Rob Gronkowski's 10th touchdown catch of the year brought them within a point.

Gronkowski became the first tight end in NFL history with four seasons of double-digit touchdown catches.

The Chargers (8-5) struggled to respond despite leading 14-13 at the half. It was a stark contrast from the first half when San Diego scored twice in a span of 2 minutes and 33 seconds. Quarterback Philip Rivers only threw for 189 yards and one touchdown, tossing a second half interception that halted a potential scoring drive.

Brady finished the day with 317 passing yards and two touchdowns in the comeback win. New England also notched their 12th straight 10-win season.

Rivers Helps San Diego Stun Baltimore for Victory

Rivers Helps San Diego Stun Baltimore for Victory

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images(BALTIMORE, Md.) -- Eddie Royal's one yard touchdown catch with 38 seconds left gave San Diego a 34-33 lead as the Chargers (8-4) stunned the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon. San Diego scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and were able to keep pace with Kansas City and Denver in the AFC West.

The Ravens (7-5) opened up a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter, 30-20, with less than seven minutes to play in regulation. Philip Rivers then marched San Diego 77 yards in just over two minutes, finding Keenan Allen on a 23-yard strike to pull his team within three.

Baltimore added a field goal, one of four by Justin Tucker on the day, to lead by six with 2:22 remaining in the game. Once again, it was Rivers leading the Chargers down the field. With under a minute to go and the ball on the Ravens 24-yard line, Rivers launched a deep ball to the endzone intended for Royal. The pass was incomplete by a pass interference call on Anthony Levine put the ball on the 1-yard line. San Diego then ran a bubble screen to the left where Royal walked into the endzone untouched.

San Diego's defense held on the final possession, not allowing Baltimore to get within field goal range. Rivers finished the day with 383 passing yards and three touchdowns, also throwing one interception. Joe Flacco tossed for 225 yards and a pair of scores while Justin Forsett rushed for 106 yards for the Ravens.

Dolphins Shutout Chargers, 37-0

Dolphins Shutout Chargers, 37-0

Marc Serota/Getty Images(MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.) -- The Miami Dolphins forced four turnovers while Ryan Tannehill threw three touchdowns en route to a 37-0 trouncing of San Diego on Sunday.

It was the eighth straight home win for Miami (5-3) over the Chargers (5-4), who have not won in South Florida since 1982.

The win was an emotional one for Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin, whose father passed away on Friday, causing him to miss two days of practice.

"I really have to give our assistant coaches and our players a ton of credit," said Philbin. "I kind of just showed up for the game."

Miami's defense set the tone, forcing three interceptions and a fumble of Philip Rivers, while Tannehill racked up 288 yards in the win. Tannehill's three touchdown passes were to three different receivers while Lamar Miller also ran for a score in the Dolphins most lopsided win since 1995.

"We're scratching the surface," Philbin said. "We certainly haven't put it all together yet."

Chargers Running Back Danny Woodhead Likely Out for Season

Chargers Running Back Danny Woodhead Likely Out for Season

Peter G. Aiken/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Already dealing with an injury to starting running back Ryan Mathews, San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead is likely out the rest of the season with a severe high ankle sprain as well as a fractured fibula.

Woodhead suffered the injury during the first quarter of the team's win over the Buffalo Bills. He needed to be carted off the field.

"Hey, we're going to keep rolling," Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said. "We have to keep going, and we're not going to make any excuses."

Donald Brown, who signed with the team during the offseason, will likely see the bulk of the carries while Mathews recovers from a MCL knee sprain.

"Unfortunately, that's the nature of the sport," said Brown, who finished with 62 yards on 31 carries in San Diego's 22-10 win at Buffalo. "Guys are going to get hurt, and other guys have to step out and carry the load. Next man (up) is pretty much the mantra of this team."

Woodhead ends his season with 38 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Chargers Prepare for Tough Road Game in Buffalo

Chargers Prepare for Tough Road Game in Buffalo

Peter G. Aiken/Getty Images(SAN DIEGO) -- The San Diego Chargers (1-1) have a tough task at hand on Sunday when they travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills (2-0).

San Diego is coming off a big win against the Seattle Seahawks in week 2 and quarterback Philip Rivers understands this will be another challenge in a long season.

"It's going to be tough," Rivers said. "[They're] not a team we're overly familiar with and they've won two in a row. We got to go play good."

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is doing everything he can to prepare his defense for stand-out rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins.

"He's on his first go-around with each defensive back," McCoy said of the rookie.  "He plays it for a little bit and as the game goes on he learns a few more things about the technique that guys trying to play. He's got so much to learn, but he's done a nice job the first couple weeks of the season, very explosive player."

Richard Sherman: I Was Not Exposed

Richard Sherman: I Was Not Exposed

Steve Dykes/Getty Images(RENTON, Wash.) -- Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman still is confident in his abilities after Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen said Sherman was a "normal guy and not a shutdown corner" after their win over Seattle on Sunday.

"You know, when a guy wants his name in the paper, he's gotta say something crazy," Sherman said about Allen on Wednesday. "It's humorous. I guess he wants something to tell his grandkids: 'Remember the day I caught a couple of balls on Richard Sherman? No touchdowns, but I caught a few.'"

Sherman and the Seahawks are preparing for a Super Bowl rematch against the Broncos on Sunday.

Sherman added that he is still a shutdown cornerback although he isn't perfect all the time. "I played pretty well," he continued. "But it's really funny that two little Chargers say I was exposed. One had 50 yards, and one had 60. It makes you laugh."

Sherman was referencing Allen, who had five receptions for 55 yards, and Eddie Royal, who had seven receptions for 69 yards, respectively.

The Seahawks signed Sherman to a record four-year deal during the offseason.

Cardinals Edge Chargers, 18-17, on Monday Night

Cardinals Edge Chargers, 18-17, on Monday Night

Scott Boehm/Getty Images(GLENDALE, Ariz.) -- Veteran Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer rallied the Cardinals past the Chargers on opening night with a 13-yard touchdown pass to John Brown late in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals defense did the rest and batted down a Philip Rivers pass on fourth down for the 18-17 win.

"It was a sweet little touchdown," Palmer said of Browns first-career touchdown. "That's what he does. He's so shifty. It's like somebody's controlling him with a joystick. He is so quick and so hard to find on those little quick screens."

Arizona was down 17-6 entering the fourth quarter and Palmers' two touchdown passes in the fourth gave them the lead for good.

Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald had only one reception in the fourth quarter, but kept his streak alive at 150 games with at least one reception.

"Too many mistakes. Too many mistakes in crucial times," Rivers said after the game. "We had plenty of opportunities. Offensively, we had too many mistakes in crucial times that turned into points."
