Colby Lewis Angry After Bunt from Colby Rasmus

Colby Lewis Angry After Bunt from Colby Rasmus

Texas Rangers/MLB (NEW YORK) –  They may share the same first name, but Texas Rangers starting pitcher Colby Lewis and Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus have two entirely different opinions on what transpired during the 5th inning of Saturday’s contest between their respective teams.

Lewis and Rasmus exchanged words after Rasmus laid down a bunt single with two outs and the Blue Jays leading 2-0.  The Rangers were playing the shift, but Lewis still wasn’t too pleased with Rasmus’ decision to bunt.

“I told [Rasmus] I didn’t appreciate it,” Lewis told MLB.com. “You’re up by two runs with two outs and you lay down a bunt. I don’t think that’s the way the game should be played.”

After the contest, Rasmus said he was not sure why Lewis would take offense to his decision to lay down a bunt.

“I’m just trying to help my team and he didn’t like it — so sorry about it,” Rasmus said to MLB.com. “I’m not here to try to please the other side, I’m here to help my team, and I had an opportunity where I could, and I took advantage of it.”

Lewis took the loss for the Rangers Sunday and fell to 6-7 on the year.  Rasmus is hitting just .223 for the Blue Jays this season.

Blue Jays Rally From 8-0 Deficit, Beat Reds 14-9

Blue Jays Rally From 8-0 Deficit, Beat Reds 14-9

Jamie Sabau/Getty Images(CINCINNATI, Ohio) — The Toronto Blue Jays trailed 8-0 after two innings on Friday night but Edwin Encarnacion led the charge as they rallied to beat Cincinnati 14-9 over the Reds. It was the second largest comeback in franchise history for Toronto (42-33) who snapped a three game losing streak.

Cincinnati (35-37) scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the large lead. Devin Morasco started things off with a two-run home run before Jay Bruce added a two-run shot of his own for the final scoring play of the frame. Eleven total batters came to the plate for the Reds who chased starter Liam Hendricks after an inning and two-thirds.

The Blue Jays began the comeback in the top of the third with Encarnacion’s first three-run shot of the night off Mat Latos. After Cincinnati added another run in the fifth, Toronto added two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to trail 9-8 heading into the eighth. Dioner Navarro’s double in the eighth to score Encarnacion, sending the game into the ninth tied at 9-9.

Aroldis Chapman then came on for the Reds to attempt and keep it a tied game. However, Erik Kratz and Melkey Cabrera had RBI hits, putting Toronto ahead 11-9 before Encarnacion launched his second three-run blast of the night off Sam LeCure. In total, Encarnacion had a career high six RBI’s while the two teams combined to hit six homers.

It was the first time the Reds have given up an eight-run lead and lost since May 20, 2010 in a loss at Atlanta. Meanwhile, it was the second largest comeback for the Blue Jays behind a 10-run comeback against Boston in 1989.

Yankees Sweep First Place Blue Jays

Yankees Sweep First Place Blue Jays

Mike Stobe/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — David Phelps turned in a quality start while Carlos Beltran drove in two runs as the Yankees swept Toronto in a three-game set on Thursday. It was the 16th consecutive win for New York (38-33) over the Blue Jays (41-33) at Yankee Stadium.

Phelps (3-4) picked up the win, tossing seven innings and allowing just two runs. The righty struck out seven in his outing but did give up a two-run homer to Melkey Cabrera in the third that tied the game at 2-2. New York quickly took the lead back when Beltran hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Ellsbury, before he added another RBI in the fifth with a ground rule double.

After Derek Jeter drove in a run with a ground out in the sixth, Yangervis Solarte worked a pinch-hit walk in the seventh that made it a 6-2 lead. Sean Kelley gave up a two-run blast in the top of the eighth to Edwin Encarnacion that closed the gap to two. Matt Thornton then allowed a base hit in the ninth before Adam Warren entered the game and picked up his second save of the year.

Drew Hutchinson (5-5) lasted just four and one-third innings, giving up four runs on six hits. The sweep tied New York with the Blue Jays in the loss column and moved them just a game and a half out of first in the American League East.

Blue Jays Shut Out Royals, 4-0, Buehrle Wins 10th

Blue Jays Shut Out Royals, 4-0, Buehrle Wins 10th

BananaStock/Thinkstock(TORONTO) — Mark Buehrle improved to 10-1 after the Blue Jays (34-24) silenced the Kansas City Royals (26-30), 4-0 on Sunday.

Buehrle pitched eight innings and allowed six hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

“It was one of those games where I could have gotten my butt handed to me,” said Buehrle, who has now won six straight decisions. “I was making mistakes and they weren’t making me pay for it.”

The Blue Jays homered twice in the victory and Edwin Encarnacion’s 19th homer of the year in the bottom of the eighth gave Aaron Loup a four-run cushion in the ninth.

“Today he was as good as he’s been all year,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Buehrle’s performance. “He topped off a nice homestand for us.”

Toronto is now 18-13 at home and Buehrle became the MLB’s first ten-game winner.
