Development Workshop can help you be job ready

IDAHO FALLS – You don’t have to go to college to get quality job training. Development Workshop Inc. offers a variety of free courses and resources to help you get the education you need.

United Way of Idaho Falls & Bonneville County has made it possible for Development Workshop to provide the School of Human Resource Solutions.

“Human Resource Solutions provides classroom training that concentrates on a variety of skills valued by area employers,” according to the Development Workshop.

Department Coordinator Jo Nelson said often those who enroll in this program have low self-esteem and don’t feel like they will be able to learn.

“They come here, and it’s very safe,” Nelson said. “The learning environment that we provide here is very adaptive for adults. They are able to achieve their goals and find out that they can learn and they can be successful. It’s really wonderful.”

Theresa Clawson, Human Resource Solutions instructor, said she loves working with her students.

“It’s really enlightening to see that, you know, when they get through a class like Excel or Microsoft Word, and the lightbulb goes on,” Clawson said.

She said the courses within Human Resource Solutions are structured so students can move at their own pace in a relaxed environment.

“They don’t have to worry about being left behind or being held back,” Nelson said.

Nelson said she wants young people to know that Human Resource Solutions is here for them too.

“Maybe college isn’t the right fit for them,” she said. “Maybe they just want to get the education they need to get a job, so this would be a great alternative for them.”

Lori Gentillon, vice president of rehabilitation at Development Workshop, said local employers have told them that many people looking for jobs lack work ethic and basic communication skills.

“One of the things we’ve added to our School of Human Resource Solutions is a professionalism class,” Gentillon said. “It’s a two-week course that folks have to complete because we know that’s what businesses are looking for.”
