Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images(LONDON) — After weeks in the hospital, George Michael is home for the holidays.

“I’m very weak but I feel amazing” he told reporters outside his house in north London Friday. Michael said it was “touch and go for a while” and added: “It was by far the worst month of my life, but I’m incredibly, incredibly fortunate to be here.”

Michael admitted that he and his reps “played down” the seriousness of his illness.

“I didn’t want to worry my fans too much and I’m really sorry I couldn’t contact them in any way before now but I was really not in any state to,” he said. Of his doctors, he said, “They spent three weeks keeping me alive basically. I don’t want to take you through all of it because some of it I want to protect my family from.”

Michael said he also plans to refund the fans who bought tickets to shows he had to cancel because of his illness.

The former Wham! frontman, 48, returned to England from an Austrian hospital earlier today. He sought medical treatment in November after falling ill while on tour. He was moved to an intensive care unit because of the “severity and extension” of his illness, according to his doctors.
