(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — A university presidential oversight committee approved a four-team playoff for college football. The new system will begin during the 2014 season and will last for 12 year.
“We believe this new format will be good for student athletes, for alumni and for our institutions,” Virginia Tech president Charles W. Steger said. “It’s a best of both worlds result. It captures the excitement of a playoff while protecting the best regular season in sports and the tradition of the Bowls.”
The new format will use a rotational format that will be used over six bowl sites, and the championship game will rotate among neutral sites.
A selection committee will be created to determine who makes the playoffs.
