Mike Stobe/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — VCU made sure nobody was going to take Shaka Smart away from Richmond.

Smart confirmed to that he is staying at VCU to coach the Rams, and the school released a stament saying Smart will have some changes in his contract.

“Coach Smart has demonstrated through this process that he is loyal to VCU and his greatest concern lies with our program moving forward every year,” VCU director of athletics Ed McLaughlin said in the statement. “Our goal was to present him with a revised agreement proactively rather than wait for another institution to step in with an offer.”

Smart was being reported as a top target of UCLA and Minnesota, who fired their coaches after losses in the NCAA tournament.

Last year, Smart turned down an offer to become the coach at Illinois.

After a Final Four berth in 2011, VCU joined the A-10 conference and finished second this season.
