“Evil Dead” Opens in First Place with $26 Million

Tri-Star(NEW YORK) — Evil Dead survived the box office competition to debut in first place over the weekend.  The remake of the 1981 horror classic earned an estimated $26 million.

Last week’s box office champ, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, fell into a second-place tie with the animated film The Croods.  Estimates indicate each film raised $21.1 million.  The final totals will be released Monday.

The 3D re-release of Jurassic Park opened in fourth place, collecting $18.2 million.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales, according to Hollywood.com:

1. Evil Dead, $26 million.
2T. The Croods, $21.1 million.
2T. G.I. Joe: Retaliation, $21.1 million.
4. Jurassic Park 3D, $18.2 million.
5. Olympus Has Fallen, $10.04 million.
6. Tyler Perry’s Temptation, $10 million.
7. Oz the Great and Powerful, $8.2 million.
8. The Host, $5.2 million.
9. The Call, $3.5 million.
10. Admission, $2.1 million.
