Rangers Edge Capitals for First Win of Series
Published at(NEW YORK) — The New York Rangers scored two tiebreaking goals in the third period to defeat the Washington Capitals 4-3 Monday night at Madison Square Garden in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series.
The Rangers went nearly two full games without scoring a goal, but managed to score four against Capitals goalie Braden Holtby.
“It’s a good group of guys,” Rangers coach John Tortorella said. “It’s just trying to get momentum on your side and finding a way to win the hockey game. We got it done.”
Derek Stepan gave the Rangers the lead for good, scoring a goal with 6:25 remaining in the third period.
“As a team we just stuck together,” Stepan said. “On the bench everyone had a good feeling.”
Washington still leads the series 2-1 with Game 4 set for Wednesday night at the Garden.
