The musical Kinky Boots won six awards at the New York City ceremony, honoring the best of Broadway.  It earned awards for best musical, best lead musical actor for Billy Porter, and best score for Cyndi Lauper.

Kinky Boots, based on the 2005 movie of the same name, is about a man who saves his late father’s shoe factory, thanks to some help from a drag queen.  It entered the Tony Awards with a leading 13 nominations.

The award for best play went to the comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.

In the upset of the night, Tom Hanks, who appears in the play Lucky Guy, lost the lead actor in a play category to Tracy Letts of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Eighty-eight-year-old Cicely Tyson claimed her first career Tony, taking the lead actress in a play prize for The Trip to Bountiful.
