UK Campaign Leads Twitter to Expand ‘Report Tweet’ Button

Getty 020413 Twitter?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1375191949321Oli Scarff/Getty Images(LONDON) — Twitter is taking steps to protect female users from abusive posts.  The popular social networking site is installing a “Report Tweet” button on its desktop and Android versions.

But in the U.K., activists are calling for the site to do much more.

The drive began after a female activist who campaigned to get Jane Austen onto the 10 pound note was threatened with rape on Twitter.

In response, women began fighting against the ability of Twitter users to threaten them, and started a campaign around the hashtags #takebacktwitter and #shoutingback.

On Monday, Twitter released a statement titled “We hear you,” and said it would expand the “Report Tweet” button (the button was added to iPhones and iPads three weeks ago).

However, a senior British police officer is saying Twitter is not doing enough, and many British users are calling for a day of silence on Twitter to protest women being silenced.
