American Peter Willcox appeared before a court in Murmansk, Russia on Monday. Willcox was the captain of the Arctic Sunrise when it was seized last month. He was also the captain of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior in 1985 when it was bombed by the French secret service, according to a release from Greenpeace International.

Willcox allegedly refused a demand from Russian authorities shortly after his ship was seized last month.

About 30 activists and one journalist were aboard the Greenpeace International ship in the Arctic Ocean when the ship was seized by Russian border guards in September, according to the New York Times. Members of the crew had previously attempted to use inflatable boats to board a Russian offshore oil platform and were doused with cold water and threatened by security.
