He used himself as an example of how, no matter how hard a diplomat works on the world’s most serious issues, it is important for State Department employees to take time off.

“Getting the ability to be able to spend more time with family — these are really important things.  And to prove to you how important they are, I am leaving this afternoon at 5:30 to go watch the Red Sox beat the Cardinals this evening,” he said to laughter and applause. “That’s how important it is.”

A State Department official confirms that Kerry, the former Massachusetts governor, will indeed be at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox lead the series over the St. Louis Cardinals three games to two.
