Humanitarian Aid Needed for 9.3 Million Syrians
Published at(NEW YORK) — Nearly 40 percent of Syria’s population — a staggering 9.3 million people — require immediate assistance, according to the head of the United Nation’s humanitarian effort.
Valerie Amos told the U.N. Security Council that the “humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate rapidly and inexorably,” according to a spokeswoman for Amos.
Close to three million Syrians have left the country to escape violence during the course of the 32-month conflict while another 6.5 million are still living there but have been displaced from their homes, Amos’ group estimates.
It was only last month that Amos made the same appeal to the Security Council even after the U.N. recommended increased humanitarian access.
However, unsafe conditions all over Syria as well as bureaucratic red tape have interfered with the delivery of needed food, clothing and medical supplies.
