Tavares tore his MCL and meniscus in his left knee on Wednesday during team Canada’s quarterfinal win, and will miss the remainder of the season.

Even though he doesn’t blame the NHL for allowing their players to take part in the Olympics, he’s not in favor of it.

“This is probably the biggest reason why NHL players shouldn’t be in the Olympics, it should just be amateur,” Snow told Newsday. And it could have happened to anyone; it just happened to be us that lost our best player.”

Snow played for the United States in the 1994 Olympics, the last before NHL players were allowed to participate.

In his fifth NHL season, the 23-year-old Tavares has emerged as one of the best young players in the NHL. In 59 games this season, he scored 24 goals and had 42 assists for the Islanders.
