Illegal Miners Trapped in Abandoned Gold Mine in South Africa

ER24(JOHANNESBURG) — South African rescuers are scrambling to reach over illegal miners trapped in an abandoned gold mine east of Johannesburg.
Some reports say the men were trapped when a rival group robbed them of their gold and threw two concrete blocks down the shaft. Their plight discovered when their cries were heard.
Werner Vermmaak with the South African Emergency Services says getting them out isn’t easy- the mine shaft is reportedly over 160 feet deep and the men are already suffering from dehydration.
The group, called Zama Zama or gold hustlers, reportedly lives underground for weeks at a time trying to find gold.
