Russia Earns First Gold of Games in Team Figure Skating
Published at(SOCHI, Russia) — Russia is on the board at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
The Russians earned their first gold medal of the Games in the new team figure skating event.
Russia never finished worse than third in any discipline, as it scored 75 points to easily beat runner-up Canada (65 points) and the U.S., which finished in third with 60 points.
Evgeni Plushenko, who now has medals in four Olympics, led the Russians along with 15-year-old Julia Lipnitskaia.
Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White won both the the short and free dance, and national champion Gracie Gold finished second in the free skate to Lipnitskaia to help the U.S. earn bronze.
The Canadiens didn’t win any event outright, but earned enough points to take home the silver.
