That’s provided, of course, the Ohio Republican wins reelection in November and his party holds onto the House as it’s expected to.

Boehner told the Cincinnati Enquirer Monday that if all the chips fall into place, “It won’t even be close” when the time comes to pick the next Speaker.

In January 2013, Boehner survived a rebellion within the GOP ranks from Tea Party Republicans, who felt he hadn’t taken a hard enough stand against the White House during the fiscal cliff debacle.

Since then, Boehner seems to have gotten better control of his caucus, spurning some of its more radical voices still determined to force another government shutdown if necessary to slash federal programs to the bone.

He told the Enquirer he’s not concerned by various conservative groups who not only want to boot him from the speakership but Congress as well.

One thing Boehner won’t say definitively, however, is whether he’ll serve out his next term in its entirety. Just the same, the speaker claims the new condo he purchased on Florida’s Marco Island “has nothing to do with my future.”
