The Dow Jones Industrial closed up 89 points to 16,336.19. The Nasdaq added 53 points to close at 4,333.31. The S&P 500 rose 13 points, ending the session at 1,872.25.

Investors breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia wouldn’t take over areas of Ukraine. Stocks fell last week, as tensions rose over the future of the Crimean Peninsula.

Tuesday trading marked the best two-day gains in more than a month.

Microsoft jumped 4 percent to $39.52 a share after CEO Satya Nadella announced plans to unveil an iPad version of the company’s Office software suite. Analysts say that’s a first step in repositioning Microsoft’s focus toward mobile devices rather than the shrinking PC market.
