Military officers from OSCE were trying for the third time to enter the region, but were stopped by masked pro-Russian gunmen. The officers faced a warning volley of automatic weapon fire.

No one was hurt in the incident, though OSCE officers were forced to return to Kherson, Ukraine to decide its next course of action.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by telephone on Saturday with Kerry hoping to bring about a diplomatic solution to the ongoing tension.
