GETTY 4714 TaxForm? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1396870823332Ximagination/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The April 15 tax filing deadline is just over a week away and millions of people still haven’t filled out their forms.

Kathy Pickering of the H&R Block Tax Institute says about one in five taxpayers has not filed yet, and “of those people, about 60 percent are still due a refund — on average $2,300.”

“So we’re not sure what they’re waiting for,” she adds.

According to H&R Block, taxpayers last year didn’t claim $1 billion of deductions that they were entitled to.

If you don’t have all of your paperwork ready to go in time for Tax Day, you can file an extension. But, as Pickering notes, “An extension to file is not an extension to pay. If you owe taxes you still need to get those payments in on April 15th.”

If you can’t afford to pay those taxes yet, she says it’s “far better to go ahead and file and then make the payments on a plan as you can.”
