Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Southwest China
Published at(WENPING, China) — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southwestern China on Sunday morning, leaving numerous people injured or killed and thousands of homes damaged.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake was 11 miles west northwest of Wenping and about 10 kilometers underground. The tremor hit at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday Beijing time.
China’s state-run news organization Xinhua reported that at least 175 people were killed in the earthquake, while many more were still missing on Sunday night local time.
