Donahoe, who has worked for the USPS for 39 years, made the announcement at a Board of Governors meeting on Friday morning. Chairman of the Board Mickey Barnett called Donahoe “the calm in the financial storm…He ignored the naysayers and went forward with his team and built a comprehensive plan for the future of the organization, made tough decisions, and executed against those decisions.”

In the last 10 years, the USPS has eliminated about 220,000 employees.

The Board of Governors announced later Friday that the next Postmaster General and CEO would be current COO Megan Brennan.

Brennan, who Barnett praised for her “outstanding vision, leadership and executive ability,” has worked in the USPS since 1986.
