“Both Rex and John made significant contributions to the team, and they have my appreciation and gratitude for their efforts and commitment. Over the years, Rex brought the Jets a bold confidence and a couple of great postseason runs, which all of us will remember,” team owner Woody Johnson said in a statement.

Ryan took over the team prior to the 2009 season and experienced immediate success. He made the AFC Championship Game in his first two seasons with Mark Sanchez starting at quarterback.

The Jets and Ryan struggled to keep up in the AFC. The team never won more than eight games in a single season after 2010.

Overall, Ryan went 46-50 as the team’s head coach in the regular season, but 4-2 in the postseason.

Idzik came under fire for his poor drafting and personnel decisions since being hired in 2013.
