The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York wrote to a judge on Friday, saying that “despite the care provided at the hospital, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and al Liby passed away.” He had been taken to the hospital from Metropolitan Correctional Center on Dec. 31, due to “sudden complications arising out of his long-standing medical problems.”

Al-Libi was captured by the U.S. Army’s Delta Force on Oct. 5, 2013. He pleaded not guilty to terrorism charges that same month. He was still awaiting trial.

The bombings at the two embassies left more than 200 people dead, including 12 Americans.
