There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack that was apparently directed at men lining up to become police recruits.

However, a Shiite militia known as Huthis, which has steadily gained power in Yemen’s increasingly destabilized government, blamed al Qaeda militants for the assault.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which is headquartered in Yemen, has previously taken credit for similar terrorist acts.

According to witnesses, new recruits, who were mostly young men, were registering at the academy when a minibus packed with explosives detonated.  Many of the wounded were taken to hospitals, some in critical condition.

As a result of the attack, the government said it would now sign up potential police recruits locally rather than have them gather in one spot.
