Interpol Issues Red Notice for Former Ukrainian President Yanukovych
Published at(LYON, France) — Interpol issued Red Notices — international wanted persons alerts — on former Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych and Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on Monday.
According to a release from Interpol, four Red Notices were issued in total for charges including embezzlement and misappropriation. The notices were issued at the request of Ukrainian authorities, though they were not linked to a previous request made related to Yanukovych’s alleged “abuse of power and murder.”
Interpol notes that a Red Notice is “not an international arrest warrant and Interpol cannot compel any member country to arrest the subject of a Red Notice.” Still, the individuals “are wanted by national jurisdictions…and Interpol’s role is to assist national police forces in identifying or locating these individuals with a view to their arrest and extradition.”
