Milk Is the Best Post-Workout Drink, Says Report
(QUEENSLAND, Australia) — Pounding down a sports drink after a workout seems like the best way to replenish those lost bodily fluids, but are you really doing your body good?
A report out of Griffith University in Australia says stick to the white stuff instead: milk.
Researchers had 15 males around the age of 25 cycle on stationary bikes on four separate days. Each time, they were given a different beverage after the workout: cow’s milk, soy milk, a milk-based meal supplement, or Powerade.
In terms of fluid retention, the milk-based supplement was superior to all the other drinks. But when it came rehydrating, all of the milk products were better than Powerade. The only advantage that the sports drink had, it seems, was that the men enjoyed the taste more.
Milk topped even water, because water causes sodium levels to drop, resulting in even more dehydration.
