Orange County health officials say 40 people got sick from the Cholula’s Bakery’s Rosca de Reyes or Three Kings bread, a fruit cake eaten during Epiphany celebrations. The bread was sold in a dozen different locations.

Corporal Anthony Bertagna with the Santa Ana police department said a preliminary test result showed that there were signs of a synthetic type of drug in the bread.

“We’re gonna have to talk to these 40 people; we’re gonna have to look for what evidence they’ve got, if there (are) any other potential evidence,” he said.

Ireri Hinojosa, who ate some of the bread, said her heart was racing shortly after eating it.

“I was hallucinating, like I couldn’t tell the difference; I couldn’t tell if I was, I almost felt like I was not in my body,” she said.

Confirmed laboratory results are expected in one to two weeks, as health inspectors also found evidence of cockroach infestation at the bakery, which was shut down on Tuesday.

Detectives in Orange County said the bakery owners have been cooperative throughout the investigation.
