The USPS said its busiest day in December came on the 22nd, when its workers delivered more than 28 million packages, setting a record for the most packages delivered in a single day in the agency’s history. This was on top of the approximately 463 million pieces of mail that were also delivered that day.

“The volume this holiday season demonstrates that retailers and consumers increasingly are turning to the Postal Service to deliver their packages,” Postmaster General and CEO Patrick Donahoe said in a statement Tuesday. “We know how much our customers count on us to make sure cards, letters and gifts make it home, and I’m proud that we delivered on our promise.”

The Postal Service says its anticipates holiday volume to continue through January as costumers return their gifts.
