“60 Minutes” Correspondent Bob Simon Killed in Car Crash

John Paul Filo/CBS(NEW YORK) — Longtime 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon died Wednesday night in a car crash in New York City. He was 73.
Simon was riding in a livery cab, traveling southbound on the West Side Highway in Manhattan, when it struck a black Mercedes-Benz. It then careened out of control and struck the solid concrete and metal bollards. The livery cab was severely mangled.
The driver of the livery cab, 44, was taken to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was uninjured.
An investigation is ongoing by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad.
Simon’s career with CBS News spanned nearly five decades, with his work earning him Emmy and Peabody Awards.
Simon reported on subjects ranging from the Vietnam War and other overseas conflicts to the Oscar-nominated movie Selma, the subject of his most recent report for 60 Minutes. His story on Selma aired last weekend.
