Ken Feinberg, the attorney GM hired to pour through death claims from families whose loved ones died in accidents they believe were caused by the problem, raised the total to 51 on Monday.

So far, Feinberg has received 4,180 claims — 455 for deaths and 3,725 for injuries.

Initially, GM estimated that at least 13 deaths resulted from its defective ignition switches.

The deadline to file claims has passed, but Feinberg is still sorting through the many submitted at the last minute.
