Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Under Fire for Spending Report
Published at(JERUSALEM) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is coming under fire from his political rivals for living the high life on taxpayers’ money.
A report by the state auditor found that Israel’s first family is the most lavish and wasteful in the country’s history, putting another controversy on Prime Minister’s Benjamin Netanyahu’s doorstep a month before the elections.
Comptroller Yosef Shapira said he discovered excessive and unreasonable spending of public funds at both Netanyahu’s official Residence and his home from 2010 to 2012.
Budgets for food and cleaning, for example, doubled in 2011.
Downplaying the report, Netanyahu’s office said they made spending cuts back in 2013.
While Netanyahu calls the new report on his spending – a “media carnival” meant to distract voters from the real issues, others say abusing public funds may cost him votes in the upcoming elections.
