Man Convicted of Operating Silk Road Website
Published at(NEW YORK) — The founder of an underground online black market was convicted on Wednesday in federal court.
Ross Ulbricht, 30, founded Silk Road, an underground black market for drugs and other illicit goods, in addition to services that operated on a dark corner of the Internet where users could remain anonymous.
Ulbricht denied being the site’s founder and operator, but a federal jury in New York convicted him on Wednesday of drug trafficking and other charges.
Prosecutors said the verdict should send a message to anyone attempting to operate an online criminal marketplace.
Ulbricht now faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced in May.
