The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the session on Monday at 17,361.04, up 196.09 from its open.

The Nasdaq also rose by 41.45 to close at 4,676.69. The S&P 500 was also up 25.86 to close at 2,020.85.

A jump in crude oil prices to $49.82 per barrel helped energy shares rise on Monday.

Consumer spending slipped in December, as motor vehicle sales slowed and more Americans saved their money.

Consumer spending fell three-tenths of a percent, while personal income rose three-tenths of a percent, and consumers saved nearly five percent of their disposable income.
