Pope Francis Elevates 20 New Cardinals
Published at(VATICAN CITY) — Pope Francis on Saturday elevated 20 new cardinals, elevating the group he named in January.
Nineteen of the 20 new cardinals were in attendance, with only Jesus Pimineto Rodriguez of Colombia unable to be present. Rodriguez will receive his cardinal insignia from a papal delegate. Pope Emeritus Benedict was also present at the ceremony.
In his address, Pope Francis noted that the title is “an honour, but it is not honorific.” The cardinalate, then, he said, “is not a kind of accessory, a decoration, like an honorary title…rather, it is a pivot, a point of support and movement essential for the life of the community.”
Francis also spoke about love and charity, and the importance of each to the new cardinals.
“God is love and he accomplishes all this in us if only we prove docile to the working of his Holy Spirit,” the pope said. “This, then, is how we are to be: ‘incardinated’ and docile.”
