Report: Missing British Schoolgirls Likely in Syria to Join ISIS
Published at(NEW YORK) — The BBC reports that three British school girls who left the country last week to presumably join the Islamic State are likely now in Syria.
The three girls — Shamima Begum, 15, and her friends Amira Abase, 15, and Kadiza Sultana, 16 — were all last seen on February 17 when they boarded a flight from London’s Gatwick airport headed for Turkey.
According to the BBC’s source, the trio may have entered Syria at least five days ago near the Kilis border crossing.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that, “Officers continue to work closely with the Turkish authorities on this investigation.”
Turkish leaders complained that they weren’t notified about the teenage girls until three days after they arrived in Istanbul and aren’t responsible for what happened to them.
The BBC says that the Begum, Abase and Sultana, who all attended Bethnal Green Academy may have crossed into Syria with the help of smugglers.
Their family members in Britain have pleaded for them to return.
