According to a company blog post, written in response to criticism from the Mumbai Transportation Department, Uber says it will launch an in-app panic button and a “safety net” feature on Feb. 11. The panic button is intended to allow a rider to alert local police of an emergency at the push of a button, while the safety net feature will allow users to share trip details and up-to-the-minute location with as many as five friends and/or family members. Both of these efforts are aimed at improving customer safety.

In January, a woman in India sued the company for failing to properly screen its drivers after she alleges she was raped.
