The U.S. will allow the import of any goods produced by independent Cuban entrepreneurs, with the exception of prohibited food and agricultural products, alcohol, minerals, chemicals, textiles, machinery, vehicles, arms and ammunition.

The announcement follows President Obama’s December announcement of a normalizing of relations with Cuba. According to the State Department, independent Cuban entrepreneurs will have to demonstrate that the business is not operated, owned or controlled in any part by the Cuban government.

Some tariffs may apply on goods imported from Cuba.

The announcement could be an important part of ending the 50-year embargo on the island.

Major League Baseball told ABC News on Friday that the league is exploring business opportunities in Cuba. Numerous MLB players have come from Cuba, including Bobby Avila, Jose Canseco and modern stars like Yasiel Puig have come from Cuba.
