Workers at Nine Major Oil Refineries on Strike
Published at(NEW YORK) — Workers at nine oil refineries in California, Kentucky, Texas and Washington are on strike Monday after bargaining talks between the United Steelworkers Union and U.S. refiners broke down.
Union President Leo Gerard said in a statement that “Shell refused to provide us with a counter-offer and left the bargaining table…we had no choice but to give notice of a work stoppage.”
The stoppage began at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
Shell was the lead company for the National Oil Bargaining talks, according to USW. Among the union’s complaints are “onerous overtime; unsafe staffing levels; dangerous conditions the industry continues to ignore…and the erosion of our workplace.”
