But all is not lost if you’re also planning a European vacation this spring, summer or fall and want to know the countries where people are the happiest.

Eurostat, which provides statistical information to the institutions of the European Union, conducted a survey in 2013 in which Europeans were asked on a scale of zero to ten how satisfied they were with their lives, ten representing the highest score.

Overall, the continent scored a 7.0.

Countries recording the highest happiness marks were Finland, Switzerland and Sweden with the United Kingdom, Germany and Poland not too far behind.

Oddly, countries where there’s abundance of sunshine like Spain, Italy and Greece were somewhere in the middle while Bulgaria, Serbia and Cyprus brought up the rear.

If you happen to visit Bulgaria, try to avoid hanging around with anyone 75 and older. They registered a 3.8 on the happiness scale, the lowest of any age group in any country.
