Britain’s Kennel Club, the body which oversees the famous Crufts dog show, said on Monday that toxicology tests show that the Irish Setter who died after appearing at the top event was almost certainly poisoned after the contest, back home in Belgium.

The club said in a statement the dog, Jagger, died after eating fast-acting poison some 28 hours after attending the show.

“There has been a lot of concern about whether the poisoning happened at Crufts and we are now able to reassure all dog lovers who came to Crufts that this could not have been possible and it is highly likely that the poisons, thought to be on a piece of beef, were eaten in Belgium, shortly before Jagger’s death,” said club secretary Caroline Kisko in a statement.

Two different poisons were identified in the lab, according to Kisko, which would usually occur within half an hour to three hours after being ingested.

“Regardless of the fact that the poison was not ingested at Crufts a dog has very sadly died and we must now respect the owners’ privacy and give them time to grieve,” said Kisko.
