Heavy Metal Detectors Now at Baseball Ballparks
Published at(NEW YORK) — Entering Major League Baseball stadiums this year will be like going through the last ring of security at airports with the addition of metal detectors.
All 30 ballparks in both the American and National Leagues are now required to have walk-through metal detectors installed at every gate or almost all of them.
Baseball took this step after discussions with the Department of Homeland Security following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.
This new round of security entails setting keys, cameras and cellphones aside but no one has to remove their belts, watches or shoes. As usual, bags will be checked by security personnel.
Although the new procedure is somewhat inconvenient, fans at least won’t have to be checked with a hand-held wand.
As most Opening Days are sell-outs, fans are encouraged to get to the park a little earlier than usual since lines will be longer than at most other games.
