Obama: With Daughters Growing Up, ‘I Need Prayer!’

WH 4715 ObamaEasterBfast? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1428416412580The White House(WASHINGTON) — President Obama kicked off Tuesday’s Easter Prayer Breakfast on a light note.

“My first concern was whether you actually got something to eat. Sometimes prayer breakfasts are advertised and then you get there and there’s like no muffin, a couple of berries,” he said as laughter filled the East Room. “Though your soul may be nourished, you leave hungry.”

“I want to thank everybody here for their prayers, which mean so much to me and Michelle, particularly at a time when my daughters are starting to grow up and starting to go on college visits. I need prayer!” he continued, to more laughter. “I start tearing up in the middle of the day and I can’t explain it. Why am I so sad?”

Obama, who noted that Pope Francis will visit the U.S. later this year, said Easter should remind us to “strive to see the lord” in “the imprisoned, sick, unemployed, and persecuted.”

“Easter is our affirmation that there are better days ahead,” he said. “And also a reminder that it is on us, the living, to make them so.”

The president said that “less-than-loving expressions by Christians” leave him “concerned.”

“But that’s a topic for another day,” he said with a chuckle. “I was about to veer off. I’m pulling it back.”
