“It felt good,” Madson told the Kansas City Star of getting a spot. “I really, genuinely smiled, and had a good moment there.”

Madson last pitched during the 2011 season as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. He was coming off a 32 save season and hit the free agent market as one of the best relievers in the game.

He wound up signing a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds, but needed to undergo Tommy John Surgery that same offseason and never pitched for the team. The next offseason he signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels, but again had to sit out the season as he continued to experience elbow pain.

Madson decided to sit out in 2014 in hopes of getting healthy enough to give it one more try. He signed a minor league deal with the Royals in January, and will now be part of the defending American League Champions.
