According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an open quick release lever on the front wheel hub of the bicycles in question can contact the front disc brake accidentally. There have been at least three incidents involving the defect, all including injuries. The CPSC says one incident left the rider paralyzed, while the other two resulted in one rider with a broken wrist and another with facial injuries.

About 900,000 of the bikes were sold in the U.S. with 98,000 more sold in Canada. All models of Trek bicycles from 2000 to 2015 could be affected by the issue.

Authorized Trek retailers can install a new quick release that would fix the problem, the CPSC notes.
