Cuban President Castro Thanks Pope Francis at Vatican
Published at | Updated at(VATICAN CITY) — In a Sunday meeting inside the Vatican, Pope Francis and Cuban President Raul Castro discussed the U.S. and Cuba’s thawing relationship.
President Obama announced in December that the U.S. and Cuba would be resuming diplomatic ties with mediation hosted by the Canadian government and led by the pope.
The one hour private meeting served as a way for Castro to thank the first South-American pope for his own role in loosening the countries’ tense relations.
The pope is scheduled to visit Cuba and the U.S. in September. He will also meet with President Obama during that time.
