Novak Djokovic Fails to Win Career Grand Slam, Loses French Open Final to Stan Wawrinka

Scott Clarke / ESPN Images(PARIS) — Novak Djokovic came up short in his attempt to capture a career Grand Slam at Sunday’s French Open Final.
Djokovic was playing in his third French Open final — he lost this match in 2012 and 2014 to Rafael Nadal. The Serb was defeated once again on Sunday, this time by Stan Wawrinka in four sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
“I lost to a better player,” he said after the match, praising his opponent for playing “courageous tennis.” Wawrinka, Djokovic added, “deserved to win.”
Djokovic defeated nine-time French Open champ Nadal in the quarterfinals this year, en route to Sunday’s Final. Still, he was unable to become the eighth man to complete the career Grand Slam and will have to wait at least one more year to try again.
The 28-year-old Djokovic still boasts eight Grand Slam championships, including five at the Australian Open, two at Wimbledon and one at the U.S. Open.
