FAA Fines SkyWest Airlines Nearly $1 Million
Published at | Updated at(SEATTLE) — The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday announced more than $1 million in fines against SkyWest Airlines for using planes that were allegedly not in compliance with regulation.
The FAA accused SkyWest of failing to inspect the cargo door skins on two of their jets after cracks were found in the door skin during fatigue testing. Regular inspections, the agency says, could prevent a accidents or unsafe situations.
The two aircraft were flown on 15,969 flights while inspections were overdue, the FAA says.
“Safety is our top priority,” FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said in a statement. “We expect operators to comply fully with all FAA regulations and directives.”
SkyWest expressed disappointment in a statement in response to the fines. “SkyWest has worked with the FAA to ensure that our aircraft procedures and appropriate checks are conducted as outlined within our maintenance program,” the statement read.
