‘FIFA 16’ to Feature US Women’s Soccer Star Alex Morgan on Cover

Michal Czerwonka/Getty Images(REDWOOD CITY, Calif.) — Electronic Arts, Inc. announced on Monday that its popular FIFA 16 video game will feature U.S. Women’s National Soccer team star Alex Morgan on its cover in the U.S.
Morgan, along with Canadian women’s team captain Christine Sinclair, will be the first women to appear on the cover of a FIFA game, the company says. EA had previously announced that the upcoming game would feature 12 women’s national soccer teams.
“It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of EA SPORTS FIFA,” Morgan said in a press release. “I know people all over the world play this game and I’m really excited that FIFA 15 is putting such an important spotlight on women’s soccer.”
Morgan — and Sinclair, on copies sold in Canada — will share the cover of the game with international soccer star Lionel Messi, considered by many to be the best in the sport.
“As soon as we knew Women’s National Teams were joining FIFA 16, we immediately recognized that Christine and Alex would be the perfect cover athletes based on their accomplishments and what they represent for their respective countries and the sport of women’s soccer,” Senor Manager of North America Marketing for EA Sports David Pekush said in a statement.
Morgan was a key part of the U.S. team that won the Women’s World Cup earlier this month.
The game will be available in North America on Sept. 22.
