Italy Suspends Consular Services in Egypt After Bombing
Published at | Updated at(CAIRO) — Italy is working to re-open its consulate in Egypt after Saturday’s bombing destroyed the building’s facade and killed one passerby.
The consulate, which issues about 2,200 visas each year, was closed Sunday and the Italian Embassy said that it would suspend consular services in the wake of the bombing. The building’s visa office was destroyed in the attack, as were some other offices.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry spoke with his Italian counterpart on Saturday, condemning the attack. Shoukry, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry says, vowed that his country “will never waver and will continue its efforts with all the countries of the world, including Italy, to combat terrorism and to root it out from wherever it may be.”
Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni posted to Twitter on Sunday saying that no Italians were killed in the bombing, and that the search for those responsible would continue. He also promised that Italy “won’t be intimidated.”
